Portage County school rallies around girl fighting cancer

KENT, Ohio - A 7-year-old Portage County girl is battling cancer, but she is not fighting alone.

Skylar Noe's school is rallying to help her take on Burkitt's lymphoma. It is a very aggressive type of Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma and can be fatal.

Brimfield Elementary School dedicated the entire week to Skylar.  As a part of "Team Skylar Week," students sold wristbands and donated $10 to take part in fun activities. More than 100 students packed the gymnasium every day. The kids jumped rope, dribbled basketballs and made sure Skylar knew she wasn't going through her battle without support.

"She is really sweet and really cares about others. She is always there to help anyone," said Brooke Thur, a friend of Skylar. Another friend, Maria Damico, said "We really miss her and we hope she gets better soon."

Skylar's first grade teacher, Mandy Fulks, organized the fundraiser.

Fulks said, "It's been an amazing week. We have so many kids wearing wristbands and we have more than 155 students coming out everyday to honor her and to raise money for her family."

The school raised more than $3,000. All the money will go toward Skylar's medical bills.
