'Operation Hugs' collecting teddy bears for Sandy Hook Elementary

BRIMFIELD, Ohio - An idea that started on Facebook has teddy bears pouring into the Brimfield Township Police Department.

Chief David Oliver said two residents sent a message to the department's Facebook page asking if they would help collect teddy bears for the kids of Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn. Oliver said they have collected nearly 500 bears so far.

"This is a giving area. I've been saying for quite some time, this community is a hidden gem."

Teddy bears can be dropped off to the Brimfield Township Police Department, the Suffield Township Fire Department and the Game Rack, 1747 Goodyear Blvd. in Akron.

The last day donations are being accepted is Dec. 21.

Oliver said the teddy bears will be hand delivered to Connecticut.
