KENT, Ohio - A shot fired at Kent State University Wednesday that sent the campus into lockdown stemmed from a domestic dispute between the suspect and two women, Kent State Police said this morning.
Kent police arrested 24-year-old Quavaugntay Tyler, a freshman, after they said he pulled out a gun and accidentally shot himself in the hand during an argument with two women. He was charged with carrying a concealed weapon and is expected to be arraigned Thursday afternoon.
Reports of a single shot being fired near Bowman Hall on the KSU main campus went out around 8:45 p.m. Wednesday.
According to Executive Director of University Media Relations Eric Mansfield, the campus is back to regular operations.
School officials held a press conference at 11 a.m. Thursday, identifying Tyler, who is on probation on a theft charge in Brimfield, and detailing the investigation and security efforts by law enforcement officers.
KSU's notification system sent messages to students, staff and faculty. It had been tested just six weeks ago.
Kent city police assisted Kent State police officers on the scene to safely evacuate students from academic buildings.
After the gunshot was fired, both women fled in a vehicle unharmed and Tyler asked a friend in one of the residence halls to hide his backpack, which contained the weapon. He then sought treatment at Robinson Memorial Hospital.
Tyler later told investigators where to find the gun. Kent Police Chief John Peach said Tyler was cooperative and somewhat remorseful.
He's considered a person of interest in campus thefts.
No other injuries were reported.
The lockdown was lifted for all buildings on campus around 11 p.m.
The first FlashAlert, emergency text messages, was sent to all students around 8:50 p.m.: "Kent Main Campus: Report of a shot fired near Bowman Hall. Officers in area. Stay away from area. If in area, Shelter in place until further notice."
