Kent State shooting suspect appears in court via video monitor, charged

Preliminary hearing set

RAVENNA, Ohio - The 24-year-old Kent State University freshman responsible for shooting a handgun at his own hand on campus near Bowman Hall appeared in court Monday via video.

A Ravenna Municipal Court judge charged Quavaugntay Tyler with carrying a concealed handgun.

Tyler fired the shot on Kent's campus April 2, forcing the campus into lockdown mode.

According to police, Tyler pulled out a handgun after a dispute between him and two women.  He accidentally shot himself in the hand during an argument with two women.

Tyler is scheduled to appear in court Friday, April 11 at 9:15 a.m. for his preliminary hearing.

His bond has been set at $40,000 and the judge ordered Tyler to have no contact with Kent State University property.
