Faculty at Kent State University has approved a new contract for tenure-track professors after months of negotiations.

newsnet5.com’s partner the Akron Beacon Journal reports that according to results released Saturday, university faculty voted overwhelmingly in favor of the pact. University trustees approved the agreement on Wednesday.

The three-year contract calls for2 percent merit raises plus 2 percent across-the-board raises in the 2015-2016, 2016-2017 and 2017-2018 academic years.

The agreement includes no increases in costs for health insurance, and faculty members' spouses and domestic partners won't have to enroll in their employers' plans.

Negotiations began last May. The faculty approved a strike authorization in November.

The two sides reached the tentative agreement and avoided a potential strike set for Monday by tenured and tenure-track professors.
