Adrian Barker found guilty in beating death of Kent State student Christopher Kernich during retrial

RAVENNA, Ohio - A Shaker Heights man was convicted of fatally beating a Kent State University student during a retrial.

A Portage County jury found Adrian Barker guilty on Thursday of felonious assault, murder and felony murder. He was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole after 15 years, according to court officials.

The jury began deliberating Tuesday afternoon. Barker's attorney indicated they plan to appeal this verdict as well.

On Nov. 14, 2009, Barker and his two friends, Ronald Kelly and Glenn Jefferson, were leaving a party near Kent State when they got into a fight with Christopher Kernich. Police said the group beat Kernich, who died a few days later from his injuries.

Barker was convicted in April 2010, but an appeals court reversed it, granting the former University of Akron student a new trial. The court ruled that the judge in the first trial failed to tell jurors they could consider lesser charges.
