Four Kent Police officers who were involved in a December shooting have returned to work, the police department said Friday.
According to police, the officers were placed on paid administrative leave following the fatal incident - per department policy - pending further investigation.
Officers were called to home in the 600 block of Virginia Avenue in the early morning of Dec. 17 for a report of an unwanted man inside a home creating a disturbance.
The woman who called 911 told police her cousin, 25-year-old Douglas Yon, was armed with a machete and refused to leave the home.
Authorities said the woman also told dispatchers that if officers were to respond, she believed Yon would try to run at them to get them to shoot.
The four officers who responded to the scene found Yon outside the home allegedly wielding a 2-foot long machete. Police said at least one of the officers fired shots, killing Yon.
"The officers did what they had to do to protect themselves and the people in the home," Kent Police chief Michelle Lee said after the shooting.
Police said while outside investigations into the shooting "may not be entirely complete," including an investigation led by the Portage County Sheriff's Office, police conducted an administrative investigation, which found the officers followed department procedure and policy.
