MEDINA, Ohio - The search for a robbery suspect wanted by Cleveland Heights police ended early Friday morning after a man shot himself in Medina.
Police have not yet released the suspect's name, but said the 27-year-old man was being sought for stealing jewelry in Cleveland Heights.
Around 11:45 p.m. Thursday, a Medina County deputy located the suspect walking along Interstate 271 near Route 94. According to the Medina County Sheriff's office, while searching for the man, the deputy discovered a gun in his waistband. A scuffle then ensued and the suspect fled.
According to deputies, shortly after eluding the deputy, the suspect knocked on the door of a Medina home, but ran away after getting no answer.
Around 12:30 a.m., deputies heard a gun shot ring out in nearby woods. There they found the suspect with a gunshot wound to the head.
Deputies also located what they believed to be the suspect's vehicle parked at a rest stop along southbound Interstate 271.
An investigation is under way.
Authorities with the Ohio State Highway Patrol, Medina County Sheriff's Department, Lodi Police Department, Medina Police Department, Metroparks K9 Unit, and Montville Police Department assisted in the suspect search.
