One person has died after a five-vehicle crashed occurred in Medina County early morning hours of Dec. 27 on Interstate 71.
According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, the crash occurred at about 3:30 near mile marker 216 in Montville Township.
The decedent has been identified as 75-year-old James Sexton of Edinboro, Penn.
Police said Jones was traveling northbound in a 2011 Ford Fusion when he was struck by a tan 2009 Chevrolet Malibu, driven by a 44-year-old Avon Lake resident, causing Sexton to lose control of his vehicle and travel off the right side of the road striking a guard rail.
Two other vehicles, a 2005 Chevrolet Cavalier, driven by a 58-year-old Oakwood Village resident and a 2012 Nissan Xterra, driven by a 32-year-old Hamilton resident also struck Sexton’s Ford Fusion.
Police said the after the Nissan collided with Sexton’s vehicle it caused the car to roll over on its side, coming to a rest in the roadway.
The Nissan was then struck by a 2012 Lincoln MK7 driven by a 76-year-old Cleveland resident. After striking the Nissan the Lincoln also struck Sexton’s Ford Fusion.
Sexton was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency personnel. He was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, police said.
A 5-year-old child, who was in the back seat of the Sexton’s vehicle, was transported to Akron Children’s Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
The drivers of the four other cars were treated on scene and did not require additional medical assistance, police said.
Crews worked for about three hours before clearing the scene and re-opening I-71.
The crash remains under investigation but alcohol is believed to have been a contributing factor and traffic and criminal charges are pending, police said.
