ELYRIA, Ohio - A man is dead after trying to break into a couple's home early Friday morning in Elyria, police say.
Jeffrey B. Carson, 29, of Elyria, entered the home on Water Street and was trying to steal electronics when the homeowner shot and killed him, according to police. Both the homeowner and his wife were inside the home.
Police said the couple had reported a burglary at the home in which a TV was stolen early Thursday morning.
Lt. Andy Eichenlaub said the homeowner was sleeping on the couch with his gun at about 2:44 a.m. when the burglar broke in through the window in the living room.
Police said the alleged burglar lunged at the resident after being called out.
"Oh my God. We've had a break-in and he's been shot. Oh my God," the woman said in the 911 call. "He's lying on my couch."
"We had a break-in last night and so my husband and I… My husband shot him," the woman said. At times, she's is impossible to understand in between heavy breathing and yelling.
The burglary suspect was taken to Elyria Memorial Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.
"Thank God my granddaughter didn't stay home tonight. I think this guy is dead," the homeowner told the dispatcher.
"We knew he was coming back because he unlocked my window and we noticed that it was unlocked," the woman told 911. "I have no idea who the f--- he is." The dispatcher speaks calmly to the caller, as she puts her dog into another room and tells her husband to put down the weapon.
Detectives interviewed both residents and photos were taken of the house for evidence.
