A local police officer and animal lover went beyond his call of duty while performing a welfare check over the weekend.

North Ridgeville police were called to check on an elderly woman Sunday at the request of her friends after they tried to pick her up for church and she didn't answer.

Officers went in an open window and found that she wasn't inside. They later found out she had gone to the hospital the day before and was OK.

Although the woman wasn't home, officers did find a dog in a crate in the woman's bedroom.

Patrolman and animal lover Pat West took the dog outside, walked it and fed it, according to the department's Facebook page.

Police also contacted the family, who said they would come by to take care of the dog.
