The Lorain Police Department sent out an alert on Facebook about a traffic camera email scam.

Lorain police said a resident reported receiving an email from "trafficcameraviolations@Odot.gov," which claimed she owed a fine for a traffic violation recorded by a traffic camera in the city. Police said if you receive an email like this, know that it is a scam and ignore it.

"First, the City of Lorain does not utilize traffic cameras to fine motorists," Lorain police posted to Facebook on Monday. "Second, the email address in question is fake. 'Odot.gov' is not a real website nor is it the official address for the Ohio Department of Transportation. The correct website for the Ohio Department of Transportation is http://www.dot.state.oh.us/."

Police said the email came with a Microsoft Word document attached to it. Police said it was very likely that the attachment contained malicious software, such as a virus.

Residents are encouraged to ignore and delete such emails, Lorain police advised.
