The City of Lorain will be cracking down on pet owners who tie their dogs up outside around the clock.

On Monday night, city council approved a new ordinance stating that people can't use heavy chains on dogs and they can't be tethered for ten straight hours.

Dog experts told council that habitually chained up dogs become unsocial and dangerous to kids if they break loose from their chain or tether.

Dogs also cannot be tethered continuously overnight or in severe cold or extreme heat.

The first violation fine is $50 plus court costs. After that, the fine increases with each new citation.

Eyria considered a similar ordinance earlier this month but it did not pass.
