LORAIN, Ohio - A Lorain County boy with a rare type of cancer, who wished to receive one million cards, celebrated his fourth birthday Sunday with an outpouring of love, cards and gifts from hundreds of caring people.
Gabe Rooker was diagnosed with stage-four neuroblastoma, a kind of cancer that develops in and around the adrenal glands, in July 2012. The 4-year-old is halfway through his treatments.
On Sunday afternoon, family and community members, along with a motorcycle procession of more than 100 riders, escorted by sheriff's deputies and police, surprised young Gabe for his special day.
The entire block of Boxwood Drive was filled with people singing "Happy Birthday" and sharing cards and gifts with the birthday boy.
Misty Roocker, Gabe's mother, said cards from other cancer survivors have surprised them the most.
As of Sunday, Gabe has received nearly 4,000 cards from 48 states in the U.S. and from other continents.
You can still show support by sending cards to Gabe Rooker, PO Box 403, Amherst, Ohio 44001.
