Thousands brave cold, wind to enjoy 'Light Up Lorain', Parade & Fireworks. Shops open through season

Thousands of lights adorn Veterans Park, downtown

LORAIN, Ohio - The wind was cold blowing in off nearby Lake Erie and down Broadway Avenue Saturday night, but the heart thumping sound of the Lorain High School Titans Marching Band fired up the crowd lining the parade route in historic downtown.  

Performances at Veterans Park included Christmas carols by children from the Little Lighthouse Learning Center. The beautiful and talented voices of singers Dee Dee Magdelena, Sierra Thomas, Javier Alexis, Cat Miceli and the Golden Crescent Chorus. 

Gary Fischer and his daughter Natalie from Lorain Saint Peter Grade School teamed up with NewsChannel 5's Paul Kiska to emcee the event. Paul is a Saint Peter and Lorain Catholic High School graduate who also served as grand marshal for the parade while riding in the famed Euclid Rocket car from the 1800's. The silver Euclid Rocket car with red seats is a Parade highlight and has appeared in the Macy Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City several times.

Lorain Mayor Chase Ritenauer read 'Twas the Night Before Christmas' to the kids who were called on stage and huddled around to listen to the holiday classic. 

Rey Carrion with the City of Lorain thanked the Downtown Decorating Committee and the event's sponsors all of whom teamed up to create a magical and fabulous Christmas lights display on West Erie Avenue near City Hall, Veterans Park and up Broadway Avenue.

The Christmas Tree in the spectacular Palace Theater is a must see.

Many children showed up and enjoyed the beautiful and magical Mrs. Claus's Kitchen & Santa Land at 637 Broadway Avenue which is open weekend afternoons now through December 22, call ahead for hours.

The night concluded with a truly spectacular fireworks display lighting up the night sky over the Lake Erie shore.

More than 20 new "pop up" shops are open now through the holiday season.
