Mislabeled meals has caused some controversy on Oberlin College's campus, with one national religious group calling on the school to be much more careful.
The school's dining hall normally serves an eclectic mix of foods from all around the world, but recently, some students found a typically vegetarian Indian dish contained meat and several Vietnamese dishes weren't true to their traditional counterparts.
Rajan Zed, the president of the Nevada-based Universal Society of Hinduism, said that they were concerned about the chances of mislabeling of beef products as consuming beef was considered sacrilegious among Hindus.
"I'm glad it wasn't me that ate that because I would have been very upset," said freshman D.J. Diskins, who has been a strict vegetarian for 10 years. "I look at all food labels so for me not to know, that would be very upsetting."
In a statement, Oberlin's director of dining services Michele Gross said the following:
"In our efforts to provide a vibrant menu we recently fell short in the execution of several dishes in a manner that was culturally insensitive. We are committed to making sure these missteps don't happen in the future. We have met with students to discuss their concerns and hope to continue this dialogue."
