LORAIN, Ohio - Good news travels fast.
The Ohio Grocers Association named Fligner's Supermarket in Lorain Ohio's best store.
"The people of Lorain have been very loyal to us," said owner Kel Fligner.
Kel's grandfather started the place 90 years ago.
Five generations later, Fligner's is thriving with a catering business where everything is homemade.
Fligner's was using local before local was cool: seasonal fresh produce from farms in Avon and throughout Lorain County. Livestock from Oberlin, Wakeman and Berlin Heights. A meat counter that draws people from all over.
"People come from Brecksville, Parma, Westlake, Bay Village, Pepper Pike to buy a load of meat and take it back with them," Fligner said.
"It's such fresh meat and locally grown, you know where it comes from and it keeps our farmers in business too," said shopper Robert Armstrong.
"Our smoked Kilebasa was so popular we had to build a bigger smokehouse, because we couldn't smoke enough for the holidays like Easter and Christmas," Fligner said.
Some workers have been with Fligner's on Broadway Avenue in Lorain for 30 to 50 years.
The Fligner family doesn't want a lot of turn over, so the independent store pays health insurance. provides a retirement program and know their customers by name.
Village Market in Wellington was recognized by the Ohio Grocers Association with the honor in the multi-store operation.
