Final touches for third annual run to honor fallen Elyria officer James Kerstetter taking shape

ELYRIA, Ohio - Officer James Kirstetter was killed in March 2010. In July of that year, a 5K race in honor of Kerstetter was created.

To say he was well liked is an understatement. When he passed, his fellow officers wanted to honor him in a way that he would make him proud.

"The race is three-fold. It incorporates education, physical fitness and family," said Tom Baracskai, President of the Elyria Police Patrolmen's Association.

The proceeds go to college scholarships and donations go to the Lorain Community College criminal justice program.

The Elyria Fire Department is getting involved by setting up a large American flag over the starting line.

"Any little thing they can do to help is the least they can do," said Capt. Joe Pronesti.

The run is this Saturday July 14. Registration is at 7 a.m. Walkers start at 8 a.m. and runners go off at 8:30 a.m.

The race starts behind the Elyria Police Department on Kerstetter Way.
