City, county and state police are issuing tickets for seatbelt violations this Memorial Day weekend as a reminder for people about the click it or ticket campaign

The National Highway Traffic Safety Association reports seatbelts saved 63,000 lives in a four-year period, enough to fill a football stadium.

That's why Lt. Carlos Smith with the Elyria Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol is patrolling Route 10 in Lorain County.

Once there's a primary violation like speeding, a secondary ticket is issued for not wearing a seatbelt.

"Typically you'll get your speeders anywhere from 80 mph and higher. When you take off to enjoy the festivities of the first holiday of the season: be safe, be vigilant, be a defensive driver and of course always buckle up everyone properly inside the motor vehicle,” Smith said.
