Ten years ago Avon was still a rural area. Now it's a booming suburb.
A city growing so fast a new exit was put in at Nagle Road, where there's now a new hospital and a new hotel.
A lot of new housing is also under construction, but more people and more traffic means a lot more calls for service to the police and fire departments.
"In the past 10 years we have seen a substantial amount of commercial, light industrial and residential growth,” said Avon Fire Chief Frank Root.
In the last 15 years, Avon has doubled its population to 22,000 people.
In 2003, Avon still had volunteer firefighters.
But recently they nearly doubled full-time firefighters to nine per shift.
Calls for service are expected to break a record for the Avon Fire Department, hitting 2,500 calls this year.
About 75 percent of them are medical calls for EMS crews.
During the daytime with the workforce and shoppers, Avon's population doubles to 40,000, Root said.
The police department is now taking 5,000 more calls per year than it did just 5 years ago, which means they're now hiring more police officers.
Avon Police Chief Richard Bosley said starting Oct. 17 applications will be available on the police department's website.
"Car crashes are big for us, as the commercial business has grown shoplifting is big for us,” said Avon Police Chief Richard Bosely.
Both the fire chief and police chief said their departments are keeping up with calls for service as Avon grows.
"The guys are getting busier, but they're a great group, they’re definitely up to the task"
Both the police and fire department have equipment levy’s on the November ballot.
