Nearly one in 10 people living in Lake County struggle to put food on the table. United Way is doing everything they can to change that.

On Tuesday, volunteers loaded up donations from their 24th annual "Feed Lake County" fundraiser.

Auggie Landsman, with Life Brand Cowboy Church, told NewsChannel 5, not everyone understands how many people in the county are in need.

"It's a shame but the economy got bad, a lot of people lost their jobs. There's illness that happens in families, there's a lot of things that can happen, that people don't realize," he said.

More than 31,000 families rely on food assistance in Lake County.

"It's a blessing to get this stuff," Auggie said.

The United Way's Tami Lewis told NewsChannel 5 they stock the shelves of more than 50 community food pantries and facilities.

"The 'Feed Lake County' fundraiser also raised $27,000 in funds, which we will be used later to purchase food and restock the food pantries," she said.

Lewis said the donations go a long way.

"For every dollar donated we can provide four meals to someone in need," she said.
