Top area skaters to perform in free skating exhibition at Mentor Civic Arena on Saturday

Skaters are preparing for Midwest Championships

MENTOR, Ohio - Some of Northeast Ohio's best figure skating talent will be on display at the Mentor Civic Arena on Saturday.

Thirteen area skaters who have qualified to compete in the 2014 Midwest Sectional Figure Skating Championships will be performing their competitive routines in preparation for the event, which will be held in Lansing, Michigan at the end of November.

The skaters represent local clubs from across Northeast Ohio including Lakewood, Mentor, Cleveland Heights, Shaker Heights, Strongsville and Wooster and range in ability level from Juvenile through Senior.

Nine singles skaters qualified for the event by placing in the top four of their skating division at the Eastern Great Lakes Regional Championships, which was held in Louisville, Kentucky in October.  In addition to those skaters, 2 local ice dancing teams will compete as well.

Skaters who place in the top four at the Midwest Sectional Competition will advance to the U.S. Figure Skating Championships, which at the Senior level, is the qualifying event for the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia.

The skating exhibition starts at 4:45 p.m. and is free to the public.
