School placed on lockdown after bank robbery

Painesville City Local Schools were placed on lockdown Thursday as police searched for the suspect in an armed bank robbery.

According to Painesville police, the FirstMerit bank on North Ridge Road was robbed around 9:30 a.m.

Police say the suspect in the robbery fled westbound toward Painesville. Police located the suspect in the area of Route 44 and Jackson Street and attempted a traffic stop but the suspect took off. 

A precautionary call was placed by police suggesting a lockdown of Painesville City Local Schools and Our Shephard Lutheran School while officers searched for the suspect. 

A short time later the suspect was taken into custody and and the schools were told they could resume normal operations. 

The investigation is ongoing.
