Mentor firefighters rescued ducklings that fell down a storm sewer in Dairy Queen's parking lot on Lakeshore Boulevard Friday.

Only the ducklings fell. Their mother, who did not, was in distress, according to the Mentor Fire Department.

After responding to an employee's call for help, rescuers said the mother stayed close by during their rescue attempts.

The mission proved challenging when firefighters put a ladder 8-feet deep into the sewer but still couldn't reach the ducklings.

Then a Dairy Queen employee had an idea. After running off, the employee returned with a pool skimmer.

Skimmer in hand, firefighters retrieved the ducklings while their mother waited.

"The duck family was happily reunited," Mentor Fire Department said.
