Downtown Willoughby turned purple to bring awareness to domestic violence

One in four women are victims of domestic violence

WILLOUGHBY, Ohio - Every nine seconds a woman is assaulted and beaten in the United States. One in four women has experienced domestic violence in their life.

Mallory Babika, a victim herself, turned downtown Willoughby purple on Friday night. Businesses offered purple food and drink specials. And visitors could even get purple hair streaks and nails.

Organizers held a 50/50 raffle, a Chinese auction and the Cavs girls held a meet and greet.

"Coming here and bringing such positive light on a negative situation, this is actually where my abuse occurred, I lived in downtown Willoughby so I figured that I'm going to come here and I'm going to light everything up purple," said Babika.

"No one has the right to violate you at any time in your life," said participant Joanne Kadlud.

Proceeds benefit Woman Safe, whose mission is to provide emergency shelter and support to domestic violence victims in northeast Ohio. http://
