Deputies say speed, alcohol appear to be factors in crash that killed man from Perry Township

PERRY TOWNSHIP, Ohio - Investigators said speed and alcohol appear to be factors in a crash that killed a man from Lake County early Thursday morning.

The incident happened at about 2:22 a.m. on Hale Road between Park Road and Lane Road in Perry Township.

According to the Lake County Sheriff's Office, 26-year-old David McMahon of Perry Township was traveling east on Hale Road when he lost control, ran off the road and struck a tree in the front yard of a house. His car then went airborne and landed roof-first against another larger tree.

Deputies said McMahon was both unresponsive and trapped in the car. Firefighters cut him out of the car and he was taken to the hospital, where later died. Investigators said he suffered severe head, neck and chest trauma during the crash.

Hale Road was closed for hours while deputies investigated the crash.

The sheriff's office said the investigation indicates that speed and alcohol may have played a part in the crash.
