The court battle over the Chardon Healing Fund is far from over, but Thursday brought a partial victory for the victims' families.
MUNSON TOWNSHIP, Ohio - Just outside of Chardon in Munson Township, Ohio Paving and Construction wrapped up a morning of paving a home's driveway on July 5.
The driveway was much like many others the paving crew works on daily during warm, asphalt-making weather, but this one was special. The materials and labor were all donated by two companies to help a family in need.
"We elected to donate our equipment and our services and partnered with Kokosing Materials to give this to them, to help the family out," said Ohio Paving General Manager Mike Princic.
Nick Walczak has been wheelchair bound since Feb. 27, when he was shot during the tragic Chardon High School shooting.
Nick's father's driveway had been built with an all stone foundation making it next to impossible for Nick to navigate his wheelchair to the house.
"It's a lot of money, it's a lot of time and all these guys are out here doing this for us. We're very appreciative," said Nick's stepmother, Lindsey Walczak.
"It has been very special for all of our family since February. Everybody has really shown what they're made of and what really kind, caring, wonderful people we have out there," said Walczak.
Unable to be at the Munson Township home on Thursday, Nick will try out the new smooth surface for his wheelchair on July 6. The family is planning a large dinner to celebrate Nick's new wheelchair accessible home.
