CHARDON, Ohio - The commencement ceremony for Chardon High School's class of 2013 being held Saturday is expected to be an emotional one, especially once Nick Walczak makes his way across the stage.
Walczak, paralyzed from his injuries, was shot in the neck, back and arm on February 27, 2012 when then-student TJ Lane opened fire in the school's cafeteria. Walczak survived his injuries but three students did not survive, classmates Daniel Parmertor, 16, Demetrius Hewlin, 17 and Russell King Jr., 17.
All three would have graduated this year.
Nate Mueller and Joy Rickers were also injured in the shooting. Mueller, grazed by a bullet in the deadly shooting, is expected to graduate Saturday as well. Rickers graduated in 2012.
The commencement ceremony will be held at the Mentor Fine Arts Center at 2 p.m. Governor John Kasich plans to deliver the commencement address.
Lane pleaded guilty in the shooting and was sentenced in March to three life sentences for the killings. He has appealed.
