The court battle over the Chardon Healing Fund is far from over, but Thursday brought a partial victory for the victims' families.
CHARDON, Ohio - Visitation and funeral services are now scheduled for the third student to pass away from the Chardon High School shooting.
Demetrius C. Hewlin, 16, died Tuesday afternoon at MetroHealth Medical Center after being shot during the Monday morning incident in Chardon.
According to the obituary, Hewlin, who went by the nickname "D," worked out five days a week and donated his time at the Habitat for Humanity Resale Shop in Newbury. The Chardon High School junior enjoyed reading, listing to music and playing computer games.
"We are very saddened by the loss of our son and others in our Chardon community. Demetrius was a happy young man who loved life and his family and friends. We will miss him very much but we are proud that he will be able to help others through organ donation," Hewlin's family said in a statement.
Visitation is Monday from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Burr Funeral Home on South Street in Chardon. Funeral services are set for Tuesday at 10 a.m. at the Church of St. Mary.
He is survived by his mother, Phyllis Ferguson; grandmother, Percy Carter and siblings Philip Carter and Hannah Ferguson. His family has asked that anyone wishing to remember Demetrius light a candle on March 8.
