The search for a missing boater out of Vermilion was called off Saturday afternoon after a body matching the man's description was found near the mouth of the Vermilion River by a good Samaritan.

The body was found around 12 p.m. Authorities have not released his identity.

According to officials, the Erie County Sheriff's Office discovered an unmanned 23-foot Sea Ray washed up on the shore of Lake Erie near Cranberry Creek around 9 p.m. on Friday.

Crews from the Coast Guard, Ohio Department of Natural Resources and Huron police and fire departments then responded to the area to investigate. They found a cell phone on board the boat along with a wallet and handheld GPS fish finder, which was still operating.

Family members told authorities they last spoke with him around 1 p.m. on Friday. A friend of his says he liked to fish about one to two miles offshore, and about one mile east or west of Vermilion.

Waves on Lake Erie were reported to be 4 to 5 feet on Friday.
