Avon man hospitalized after motorcycle crash in Erie County

MARGARETTA TOWNSHIP, Ohio - An Avon man was seriously injured after his motorcycle overturned and hit a large trash bin on Wednesday.

Daniel T. Gierlach, 55 was driving his 1986 Honda Shadow on state Route 101 in Erie County and didn't make the curve at Bardshar Road, the Ohio State Highway Patrol said.

The motorcycle went off the side of the road, flipped over and threw Gierlach onto ground. Troopers said the bike then hit a garbage container.

Gierlach was taken to Firelands Regional Medical Center before being flown to Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center.

The patrol said he was not wearing a helmet, and alcohol and drugs appear to be factors in the crash.
