Maple Heights police are investigating a triple shooting outside the Maple Leaf Tavern along Broadway Avenue, an establishment with a long history of calls to law enforcement, according to police records.
According to police, the shooting happened outside the bar around 1:15 a.m. Friday.
Police said three victims were shot during "an altercation."
According to a report, one victim, Devon McKenney, 25, of Maple Heights sustained a gunshot wound to the abdomen. He remains in stable but critical condition as of Friday night.
Two other victims, Wayne Parks, 25, of Cleveland and Demarkus Owens, 25, of Cleveland were treated for gunshot wounds and released.
Newsnet5.com obtained police reports at the tavern’s address for the last three years. Forty pages of reports detail more than 170 separate reports received by the police department.
The incidents reports include weapons offenses, assault, domestic violence, and disorderly conduct.
Many of the disturbances are listed in the Maple Heights Code of Criminal Activity Nuisances.
According to records, in April 2014 there were two shootings just one week apart.
Councilman Alex Adams, District 1, said he was saddened to hear about the shooting outside the tavern, but wasn’t shocked by the news.
“I would say that the new council is going to have to look into this because this is pretty extensive,” he told newsnet5.com. “It’s just uncalled for.”
Councilman Bill Brownlee, District 5, said he’s met with the bars owners in the past to discuss the prolific number of police calls.
“Unfortunately there’s not a lot we can do about what goes on outside of the establishment,” Brownlee told newsnet5.com, saying Friday’s incident was the first major problem in many months.
Maple Leaf Bartender Tracy Clark was working last night when the incident happened. She told newsnet5.com that there were no disturbances inside the building.
“Someone drove by, pulled into the parking, lot jumped out and came around the corner and just started shooting down the sidewalk,” Clark said.
She said the bar has been working hard in the last year to discourage the nuisance issues.
“We can’t help what happens outside or who’s looking for who or street stuff.
Police have not released a description of the suspects involved.
