Teen accused in school fight appears in court

The student accused in a high school fight that left another student in 'very serious' condition at MetroHealth Medical Center appeared in 

DeAndrew Smith, 18, of Westlake, is expected to appear in Rocky River Municipal Court at 10:30 a.m.

Smith turned himself into police after the fight on April 12, in which a 17-year-old student was found beaten and lethargic in the bathroom of Westlake High School. 

After Smith was charged with felonious assault, newsnet5.com found that the teen also had an outstanding case in Cuyahoga County.

Westlake police filed a felony charge against Smith on Feb. 5 for rape, kidnapping and forcing his victim to engage in sexual acts. He was a juvenile at the time.

Westlake City Schools Superintendent Geoff Palmer told newsnet5.com that the district was unaware of the juvenile court rape charges. A spokesperson for the district confirmed that high school administrators were also unaware.
