NEWTON, N.C. - An autopsy has been set for a Northeast Ohio woman who was found dead in her North Carolina apartment last weekend.
Maggie Daniels, a 31-year-old Lakewood native, attended Notre Dame and moved in 2006 to North Carolina to work as an English teacher and basketball coach.
She was discovered Saturday morning at her apartment in Newton, North Carolina, less than a mile from where she worked.
“I heard someone scream ‘She’s not breathing’,” a neighbor told ABC affiliate Channel 9 News , “When we got there she was already deceased.”
Police there aren’t saying how Daniels died but they are calling her death suspicious.
According to a report by the Hickory Daily Record , Daniels was named Teacher of the Year for Newton-Conover High School, as well as the whole school district, in 2011.
She took a year away from teaching to get a master’s degree and returned as a counselor, in 2013, at Discovery High School, the paper reports.
Newton-Conover City Schools Superintendent David Stegall released this statement:
“Maggie was an amazing teacher, colleague, and role model. She was an inspiration to all who knew her. We are heartbroken for her family as she was our family as well in Newton-Conover.”
