A 25-year-old man is dead after a crash that closed Solon Road for several hours overnight.

According to Solon police, Edward P. Hughes of Twinsburg, drove off the right side of Solon Road just after 1:30 a.m.

The 2001 Buick Century hit an above ground gas line and then utility pole. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

The passenger, a 25-year-old man from Oakwood Village, was transported to the hospital with unknown injuries.

The crash caused a gas leak that forced officers to close part of Solon Road.

Rushing gas could be heard for about an hour after the crash as Dominion East Ohio worked to shut the line down. Just before 2:45 a.m. the gas was shut off.

Officials reopened the road just after 6 a.m.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.
