PARMA, Ohio - Several homes in Parma were evacuated Tuesday afternoon after someone reported a strong smell of gas.
Parma police said the odor was reported coming from 3425 Maplecrest Ave. Residents on Maplecrest and Wellington avenues were evacuated for a few hours as a precaution.
"The readings were high and the smell was strong so we evacuated 26 houses in the area and on the street south of Maplecrest," Lt David Higginbotham said in a statement.
Parma Fire Department Public Information Officer Doug Turner said a passerby noticed a strong smell of gas in the area and called 911.
The fire department arrived at the vacant home and found the gas meter spinning. The gas company was called to the home and the gas was shut off.
Firefighters aired out the house and found copper pipes had been stolen in the basement.
The house is for sale and no injuries were reported.
