CLEVELAND - Authorities in Colorado have scaled back search efforts for a missing Cleveland-area man.
Gene George, 64, of Bay Village, was last heard from on Sept. 18 when he spoke to his girlfriend in Cleveland over the phone, the Chaffee County Sheriff's Office said on Wednesday.
Deputies said they believe George stayed at a motel that evening and other hikers said they saw a man fitting his description at the summit of Mount Harvard on Saturday. The hikers said he looked like he wasn't feeling well and asked him if he needed help. He said no and continued to descend.
He was reported missing on Sunday when he didn't check out of his motel room. George's car has already been found.
In a news release on Wednesday, Undersheriff John Spezze said the field search would be suspended, but they will continue to investigate. Fliers with George's picture will be passed out an area sporting goods stores.
Over the past four days, more than a hundred volunteers have searched for George with the help of helicopters, dog teams, horseback teams and a fixed-wing aircraft.
Anyone with information about George's whereabouts should call the Chaffee County Sheriff's Office at 719-539-2596.
