RTA documents show patron and driver assaults on the rise in 2014

CLEVELAND - NewsChannel5 is getting an exclusive look into RTA crime.

Public records obtained by NewsChannel5 this week shows RTA bus operator assaults and robberies are on the rise.

Also, the number of patron assaults in 2014 could surpass those from 2013.

According to RTA public records, there were 11 reported assaults or robberies involving an RTA operator in 2013. This year, there have already been 12 reported.

In 2013, RTA records show a total of 105 incidents where a patron was assaulted. As of July 2014,  RTA has recorded 96 incidents, suggesting the trend is on the rise.

Public records did show that patron robberies are down so far this year. In 2013, 255 patron robberies were reported. So far in 2014, just 93.

NewsChannel5 made the public records request after a bus driver was robbed while on duty and an RTA bus passenger was stabbed in the head with a pen.
