Richmond Heights police have identified the officer shot Sunday by a former Cleveland Clinic employee.
Michael Gerl, a 19-year veteran for the Richmond Heights Police Department, was identified as the officer shot.
The Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner identified the suspect who shot Gerl as 46-year-old Carlumandarlo Zaramo.
Richmond Heights police chief Gene Rowe said officers responded to the Geraldine Avenue home around 7 p.m. for a report of a suicidal man. The man spoke with officers inside the home and agreed to be transported to a hospital.
However, as he was gathering clothing, he took out a gun and shot the sergeant in the chest, Rowe said. A second officer in the home returned gun fire, killing Zaramo, according to investigators.
Gerl was shot in the upper right chest police say by Carlumandarlo Zaramo. Zaramo's wife called 911 said husband was depressed & suicidal.
