Richmond Heights police have identified the officer shot Sunday by a former Cleveland Clinic employee.

Michael Gerl, a 19-year veteran for the Richmond Heights Police Department, was identified as the officer shot.

The Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner identified the suspect who shot Gerl as 46-year-old Carlumandarlo Zaramo.

Richmond Heights police chief Gene Rowe said officers responded to the Geraldine Avenue home around 7 p.m. for a report of a suicidal man. The man spoke with officers inside the home and agreed to be transported to a hospital.

However, as he was gathering clothing, he took out a gun and shot the sergeant in the chest, Rowe said. A second officer in the home returned gun fire, killing Zaramo, according to investigators.
