Police investigating suspected drowning of 9-year-old boy at Euclid YMCA

EUCLID, Ohio - Euclid Police and YMCA officials are investigating a probable drowning at the Euclid YMCA.

At 3:18 p.m. Tuesday, the Euclid Fire Department was dispatched to the YMCA swimming pool at 631 Babbitt Road for a report of a possible drowning. Lonnie Smith, 9, of Cleveland Heights, was pulled from the water and transported to Euclid General Hospital where he was then flown to MetroHealth Medical Center and later died.

Police said Smith was noticed missing by daycare personnel after a swimming session and discovered in the pool shortly thereafter by a lifeguard.

A daycare center rented out the pool Tuesday, according to Rick Haase with the YMCA of Greater Cleveland. He said there were 26 children in the pool at the time of the incident and three lifeguards on duty.

The incident remains under investigation and the pool is closed until further notice as it is considered a crime scene.

The group who rented the pool has been identified by the YMCA as Always Available Daycare.
