SHAKER HEIGHTS, Ohio - Shaker Heights and Cleveland Heights police, along with Beachwood SWAT, ended a standoff that started Saturday night.
According to a release from the Shaker Heights Police Department, a 61-year-old man was reported to be a threat to police. The alert stated the sheriff's department signed a complaint for domestic violence, and the man was off his medication that he took for mental issues. The alert also said that the man possibly had a weapon on him en-route to the Shaker Heights area.
After Shaker Heights police received a call from the wife of the suspect that he was at an apartment on Warrensville Center Road, Beachwood's SWAT team was called to assist.
The SWAT team came inside, but didn't find the man or a gun, but did find an empty rifle case.
Around 11 p.m., the man was found in a vacant second floor apartment. He was taken into custody by Shaker Heights police. At that time, the rifle was found.
Christ Episcopal Church opened their doors to house some of the people displaced from the apartment building during the search. RTA supplied a bus that was used to transport some of the people from the scene to the church.
The man, whose name is not yet being released, is currently behind bars in the Ashtabula County Jail. He's facing charges with the Ashtabula County Sheriff's Department and in Shaker Heights.
