Following a protest in regards to the discussion of closing five schools in the Parma School District, school board president, Kathleen Petro has resigned.
The $15-million deficit was discovered earlier this year by the district's relatively new treasurer. Now school leaders are scrambling to come up with a fiscal recovery plan to meet state requirements.
Parma Schools will now ask the Ohio Department of Education for an extension in submitting its budget cuts to Nov.1.
The proposed cuts include the layoff of 30 teachers and dozens of support staff in all areas over the next three years.
Parents and students are against consolidating three high schools into one "super high school" at Parma High School.
Before the meeting on Tuesday night, hundreds of students gathered to protest the proposed changes. Around 1400 people packed into the auditorium to attend the meeting and almost 400 more were still waiting outside.
