A Cleveland Heights man charged in the slaying of a 15-year-old boy in Mr. Hero restaurant shooting was sentenced Friday afternoon.
Daveion Perry was sentenced to life in prison without parole by Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court Judge Robert C. McClelland for the shooting death of Sunny Ravi Patel in a plea deal.
Patel, who was a was a sophomore at Mayfield Heights High School, was found by Cleveland Heights police officers with a gunshot wound to his head Oct. 14 about 8 p.m. in his family's Mr. Hero fast food restaurant.
The agreement was agreed upon between prosecutors and Perry. The agreement was if the prosecution dropped the death penalty, Perry would plead guilty to the charges.
Both prosecutors and attorney's for Perry asked McClelland to go with the plea agreement.
Perry, 20, was charged with aggravated murder, two counts of felonious assault, two counts of aggravated robbery and two counts of kidnapping for the slaying of Patel and another robbery. Perry pleaded guilty to the charges Wednesday.
During Friday's court hearing, Perry was walked in by sheriff's deputies wearing an orange jumpsuit with his limbs shackled with handcuffs and chains. He sat next to his lawyers throughout most of the hearing.
Perry showed very little emotion as a victim advocate read impact statement's by Patel's father and mother.
"Did you think about your selfishness before you pulled the trigger?" Patel's father wrote. "Because of you I now have to live my life without my son."
A statement written by Patel's mother was also painful and striking.
"You took him away from me, and my heart aches," she wrote.
In her statement, she said she wished the could take and feel the pain her son felt that night. She only wants to scream.
"God may forgive you Daveion Perry, but I don't," her statement said.
Cuyahoga County Prosecutor's showed a video presentation showing the moment Perry entered the Mr. Hero restaurant and robbed and shot Patel.
A few days after that incident Perry, who was wearing a white mask, dark clothing and black gloves was observed by police putting on the mask and gloves and entering a Dollar General on Lee Road at East Overlook Road Oct. 16 about 9 p.m. Perry came out of the store with a gun and refused to follow commands by officers.
He ran away from the scene and was later arrested by police after being caught in a garage.
Prosecutors also showed a video an attempted robbery at the Dollar General.
Just before sentencing, Perry asked the Patel family for forgiveness.
"I am truly sorry for what I did," he said.
