Ceremonies across the country took place as part of National Police Week, including here in
Northeast Ohio.

Men and women killed in the line of duty were remembered for paying the ultimate sacrifice.

One of those officers remembered was Cleveland Police Officer William Shapiro.

"It was April 26, 1974. It was his birthday," said Cleveland Police Detective Dave Shapiro about his father's death.

"He was hiding in some brush, jumped out and ambushed my dad," said Shapiro. Dave Shapiro was just 5 years old when his dad was killed in the line of duty.

William Shapiro and his partner had responded to a call about a man shooting a rifle at passing cars near the Baldwin Reservoir, Shapiro was shot at point blank range in the chest with a shotgun.

Police arrested Anthony Roden for his murder. He was found not guilty by reason of insanity for the aggravated murder of William Shapiro.

Dave Shapiro is a detective in the Cleveland police department. He believes that his dad had a hand in guiding him down his career path.
