Hunting deer in North Ridgeville with cross bow now allowed

CLEVELAND - North Ridgeville City Council passed a longbow/crossbow deer hunting ordinance Monday, effective immediately. But several provisions must be met before hunting takes place. To register your land for the hunting season, Sept.29 - Feb. 3, you will have to go to the police station lobby and pick up the appropriate paperwork.

Once completed, the form must be returned to the police department lobby and placed in the collection box labeled "completed land registration forms."

After your registration form has been submitted, it will be reviewed and you'll be contacted by phone whether it's been approved or not. If approved verbally via phone, your land can then be hunted upon. A signed copy of your approved Land Registration Form will then be mailed to you.

Further provisions state:

If your land has been approved for deer long bow/cross bow hunting in North Ridgeville, all persons you allow to hunt upon your property during the season, in addition to their State of Ohio hunting license, must have and carry on their person an ODNR land permission slip signed by you. The signed ODNR permission slip will be the only document recognized by NRPD Officers as valid.

If your land has been approved for longbow/crossbow hunting of deer in the City of North Ridgeville, it is your responsibility to insure that those who hunt on your property are aware and follow all ODNR and local ordinances regarding same (an ODNR booklet and a copy of the city ordinance have been included in your packet). Landowners need to be aware that they can be held equally and mutually culpable for any violation occurring on their site and repeated violations of law may be grounds for your land registration permit to be revoked.

While city officials in North Ridgeville urge you to read the law in its entirety, some of the highlights from state and local laws are as follows:

- All hunters under the age of 18, must be accompanied by someone 18 years of age or older (city ordinance).
- All longbow and crossbow hunting of deer on registered sites must be carried out from an elevated platform or tree stand that is a minimum of 8 feet off the ground. No longbow or crossbow shot(s) may be taken on the ground (city ordinance).
