A string of car break-ins has plagued residents in Garfield Heights since the beginning of December.

"19 since December 1st, 9 over the weekend," said Garfield Heights Sgt. Todd Vargo. All of the thefts are in the southern part of the city, said to Vargo.

Two of the break-ins happened on Penfield Avenue in Garfield Heights. Bianca Flores was one of the victims. She loaded her Ford SUV up with Christmas gifts Friday night to take to her in-laws. When Flores got into her car Saturday she knew something was wrong. "$300 worth of gifts were all gone," said Flores.

Vargo said cash and electronics were among the items stolen most often.

Police believe the thief or thieves are walking up to cars and checking the doors. If the doors open, they help themselves to what is inside. If the vehicle is locked they move on.

"They are drawing as little attention to themselves as possible," added Vargo.

If you have any information that can help police solve the thefts you are asked to call 216-475-1234.

Garfield Heights police are also reminding residents to lock your car doors.
