Fresh Market leadership announced on Wednesday that their store located in the Van Aken Center in the city will close and will not relocate to the former Qua Buick location this year.

According to the city, the grocery chain was bought by Apollo Global Management LLC in April. Since, Fresh Market has worked with RMS and the City of Shaker Heights to gain a site plan and Architectural Board of Review approval for the new store.

The city said the new owner for Fresh Market chose to "abruptly close the Shaker Heights store and abandon the Cleveland market altogether."

The store is one of over a dozen others that have closed or had canceled openings by new ownership, the city reported.

The City of Shaker Heights said Fresh Market's decision does not affect RMS' plans for the Van Aken District phase one development. The revitalization for the Shaker Plaza was already underway with Pearl Asian Kitchen, New Balance and D.O. Summers joining existing tenants Walgreens, China Star, Shaker Wines and Qdoba.

Subway, Frames Unlimited and Donatos are scheduled to open in August.

RMS plans to demolish the south-facing wing of Van Aken Center in early September to begin development of the first phase of the $100 million project.
