French respond to NewsChannel5 on Cleveland suburbs' surprise over government's travel warning

CLEVELAND - The French are responding to hubbub over their recommendation to avoid three Cleveland suburbs by day and night.

In a story posted Wednesday , Clevelanders were surprised to see the French government tell its people to be wary of Cleveland Heights, Euclid and Lakewood.

Thursday, a member from the press and communication team at the French consulate in Chicago sent this email to our multimedia journalist Rich Geyser:

We take note of your concern. We are in the process of reviewing the information.

France, like all countries, including the United States, has the responsibility to issue travel information and recommendations to its citizens traveling abroad. The French Ministry of Foreign Affairs aims to provide the most useful and up to date information.

France has a very active presence in the Cleveland area, with some 1,100 French citizens proud to call it home. There are also many successful cultural and economic partnerships with France and we proudly support tourism development in the region.

Best regards,

Ms. Pascale Furlong

The French also warned to be careful of downtown Cleveland in the evening and issued recommendations for other major U.S. cities as well.
