Cuyahoga Community College west campus, students on alert after attempted abduction report

PARMA, Ohio - The Cuyahoga Community College West Campus in Parma and its 13,000 students are on high alert after what police called an attempted abduction in a campus parking lot.

A female student told police that Tuesday at 5:20 p.m. she was walking through the parking lot at the Tri C west campus in Parma.

The student told police a man left his parking space and pulled next to her car, which made her feel uneasy. As she was about to get into her car, the man approached her and said he wanted to take her home with him.

Feeling threatened and scared, the woman took action.

"She reached into her purse and grabbed pepper spray, and actually sprayed this individual, and along with spraying him she kicked him in the groin area," said Tri C Police Chief Clayton Harris.

The woman drove away and called police.

Police are reminding students to walk in groups or ask campus police to escort them to their car, especially now that the sun sets so early.

Some students say they plan to call police for an escort.

"It just made me think that I really should do that, instead of being tough and just going to my car," said student Meghan Pierce.

Students say they were quickly notified of the incident by campus officials through email and fliers.

As for the victim's fight or flight decision, Chief Harris said trust your instincts.

"There are times you have to be cognizant and cautious because it can excite certain people into doing other things and make it very dangerous, so it's actually a personal choice of what you do, but whatever you do you have to make the best decision for that time," said Harris.

Police said the female student told them the person was a white man in his 20s, about 5 feet 11 inches tall, weighing between 175 and 200 pounds, wearing a black jacket with a hoodie and blue jeans.

The man drove off in a green two door car.

Anyone who might have witnessed this or would like a police escort to their car at the campus can call Tri C police at 217-987-4325.

Police are also checking surveillance video.
