The Cleveland Police Patrolmen's Association has formally endorsed Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump for President of the United States.

Steve Loomis, president of the CPPA, said in a prepared statement that the decision to endorse Trump was not supported by all members of the police union.

Cleveland officers voted to support Trump by a margin of 71 percent. Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton notched about 22 percent of the officer's vote, and 7 percent voted to support an outside candidate.

The CPPA's move reflects the endorsement of Trump by the Fraternal Order of Police, a national police labor organization.

"Obviously, this is an unusual election," Chuck Canterbury, National President of the FOP, said in a prepared statement. "We have a candidate who declined to seek an endorsement and a candidate without any record as an elected official. Mr. Trump, however, has seriously looked at the issues facing law enforcement today. He understands and supports our priorities and our members believe he will make America safe again."

In order to secure the FOP endorsement, Trump had to secure at least a two-thirds majority of the union's 330,000 members.
